Disinfection

Mattress disinfection: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and dust mites

A mattress accumulates millions of microorganisms within months. Vacuuming doesn't kill them. Here's when disinfection makes sense and what results to expect.

The problem

Why does a mattress need disinfection?

Every night, your body deposits sweat, saliva, dead cells, and bacteria into the mattress. Add dust mites, microscopic fungi, and in some cases, viruses. Over time, the mattress becomes a reservoir of microorganisms. Vacuuming the surface removes dust but doesn't kill bacteria or fungi living inside the foam.

A 2-year-old mattress without disinfection has accumulated millions of mites and bacteria
Microscopic fungi grow in humid environments, night sweat gives them what they need
After an illness, the mattress can retain viruses and bacteria for days
A second-hand mattress may carry microorganisms from the previous user
Vacuuming doesn't disinfect, it just moves dust and some dead mites from the surface
When you need it

When should you disinfect your mattress?

Disinfection isn't needed every month. But there are moments when it's necessary or highly recommended.

You've bought a second-hand mattress or received one as a hand-me-down
Someone has been sick in bed for more than 2-3 days
You have allergies that worsen at night and you've already tried antihistamines
The mattress has been stored or unused for months
You manage tourist accommodations with guest turnover
It's been over a year without professional cleaning and the mattress smells or has stains
How it works

How we disinfect a mattress

Professional protocol in 3 steps

1

Condition inspection

We evaluate the mattress visually and with UV light. We identify stains, mold areas, accumulated dirt levels, and potential infection points. This determines which products and treatment intensity to apply.

2

Deep disinfection

We apply professional biocide that penetrates inside the mattress. It kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses on contact. It's not an air freshener spray, it's a registered disinfectant that acts on microorganisms, not on odor.

3

Anti-mite treatment and extraction

We complete with acaricide to kill live mites and their allergens. Then, with injection-extraction, we pull out all dirt, dead microorganisms, and debris from inside the mattress.

Why professional

Why aren't store-bought disinfectant sprays enough?

Supermarket sprays only act on the surface, they don't penetrate the foam where bacteria live
Most textile "disinfectant" sprays are air fresheners with some alcohol, they don't kill fungi or viruses
Without professional extraction, dead microorganisms stay inside the mattress and remain allergens
Professional biocides are registered and tested against specific bacteria and fungi, household sprays aren't
Spraying a mattress with alcohol or bleach damages the fabric and doesn't disinfect the interior
The result

What results to expect

Over 99% reduction in surface bacteria and fungi after treatment
Over 90% elimination of live dust mite population
Allergy sufferers notice improvement in congestion and sleep quality from the first night
The mattress looks visibly cleaner and odor-free, dark water comes out during extraction
The effect lasts 6-12 months with normal use
It's not permanent: microorganisms return with daily use, but from a much better starting point

Disinfection, not sterilization

Professional disinfection reduces bacteria, fungi, and mite levels to very low levels. But a mattress isn't an operating room. From the first night of use, microorganisms start accumulating again. The difference is you start from near-zero levels and it takes months to build up to a high load again. For allergy sufferers or at-risk situations, that difference is significant.

Services

Situations that require disinfection

Disinfection isn't always necessary, but in these cases it is

Second-hand mattress

You don't know what happened on that mattress before. Full disinfection removes what the previous user left: bacteria, mites, sweat, possible fungi.

After an illness

Flu, Covid, gastroenteritis... If someone has been sick in bed for several days, the mattress retains viruses and bacteria. Disinfection breaks the cycle of contagion.

Allergies and respiratory issues

Rhinitis, asthma, nighttime coughing. If symptoms worsen when you lie down, the mattress may be the source. Disinfection drastically reduces allergens.

Mites and allergens

When the problem isn't just dust but a high mite population. Disinfection + acaricide treatment is more thorough than just vacuuming.

Airbnb, hotel, or vacation rental

Each guest leaves their biological load. Periodic disinfection is basic hygiene when the mattress is used by different people.

Move-in or stored mattress

A mattress stored for months in a storage unit accumulates humidity, dust, and fungi. Before using it again, disinfection is essential.

FAQ

FAQ about mattress disinfection

How often should a mattress be disinfected?
For normal home use, once a year is sufficient. If you have allergies, every 6 months. If you manage tourist accommodation, after each high season or every 3-4 months.
Do products like Sanytol or Lysol work for mattress disinfection?
They reduce surface bacteria but don't penetrate the interior. And they leave chemical residues on the fabric that you then inhale while sleeping. It's not the same as professional treatment with extraction.
Can a mattress be disinfected with steam?
High-temperature steam kills bacteria and mites on contact. But it has a problem: it introduces a lot of moisture into the mattress, which can cause mold if not dried quickly. We use biocide + extraction, which disinfects without soaking.
How long does it take to dry afterward?
Between 4 and 6 hours with good ventilation. We extract excess water with the machine. With a fan, it reduces to 3-4 hours. If treated in the morning, you can sleep on it that night.
Are the products you use safe for children?
Yes. We use registered biodegradable biocides. Once the mattress is dry, no toxic residues remain. It's safe for children, babies, and pets.
Is it worth disinfecting an old mattress or better to buy a new one?
If the mattress has sagging or lost support, disinfection won't improve your rest. If the structure is fine and the problem is hygienic (odor, stains, allergies), disinfection gives it a second life.
