How often should the mattress be treated?

For people without allergies, once a year is sufficient. If you have dust mite allergy, every 6 months. The goal is to keep the population low, not eliminate them forever — that isn't realistic.

Does putting the mattress in the sun help?

It temporarily reduces surface moisture, which slightly slows reproduction. But it doesn't kill the ones inside or remove accumulated allergens. It's a complement, not a solution.

Do anti-mite covers work?

Yes, as a barrier. They prevent allergens from inside the mattress from reaching you while you sleep. But they don't kill mites already inside. Ideally, clean the mattress first and then put the cover on.
