Odor removal

Remove sofa odor: causes and real solutions

Dog smell, dampness, smoke, food... The problem is almost never on the surface. Odor builds up in the padding, and that's where you need to act.

The problem

Why does your sofa smell?

A sofa absorbs everything that happens at home: body sweat, pet hair, ambient moisture, food, smoke. The fabric and padding act like an odor sponge. Over time, those smells accumulate and won't go away just by airing out.

Foam padding retains odors for months, airing out isn't enough
Pets leave oils and bacteria on the fabric that produce constant odor
Humidity promotes mold growth inside the padding, invisible from outside
Tobacco smoke penetrates fibers at a molecular level, air freshener won't fix it
Food and drink residue ferments inside the upholstery without you noticing
When you need it

When do you need professional deodorizing?

Air fresheners and baking soda may work for mild, recent odors. But there are clear signs you need something more.

The smell returns after airing out or using air freshener
You've washed the covers but the smell persists, it's coming from the padding
The sofa smells worse when it's hot or humid
You see dark spots or mold on the back of the sofa
Visitors notice it but you don't anymore, you've gotten used to it
Your pet has urinated on the sofa and the smell won't go away
How it works

How we eliminate odor

We don't mask it, we remove it from the inside

1

Source identification

Pet odor is treated differently from damp smell. Before applying anything, we determine the cause. This avoids wasting time with products that won't work.

2

Neutralizing treatment

We apply enzymatic products that break down odor molecules in the padding. We don't mask: we eliminate the cause. For mold, we use specific biocides.

3

Deep wash and extraction

With injection-extraction, we clean the entire upholstery, pulling out the organic residue that generates odor. The sofa is clean on the inside, not just the outside.

Why professional

Why don't home remedies work?

Baking soda absorbs surface odor but doesn't reach the padding where the cause is
Air fresheners mask the smell for hours, then it returns exactly the same
Vinegar disinfects the surface but its own smell can linger on the fabric
Only professional injection-extraction cleans the inside of the sofa where odor accumulates
Professional enzymatic products break down the organic matter generating the odor instead of covering it up
The result

Results by odor type

Pet odor: full elimination in most cases after one session
Mild damp smell: disappears completely with treatment + good ventilation afterward
Mold odor: odor and mold eliminated if the padding isn't damaged
Moderate smoke odor: drastic reduction in one session, may need a second
Urine odor: complete elimination even when the stain is no longer visible
"Old" smell: one session is usually enough for a fresh-smelling sofa

Let's be realistic

Most odors are eliminated in one session. But intense tobacco smell (years of smoking indoors) may need two sessions. And if the padding has advanced mold, sometimes replacing the cushions is more practical than trying to save them. We tell you before we start.

Services

Types of odors we eliminate

Each odor has its cause and treatment

Pet odor

Dogs and cats leave oils, hair, and bacteria on the fabric. We treat with enzymes that break down organic matter, not perfume.

Damp and mold odor

If the sofa was in a humid room or got wet, mold grows inside the padding. It needs biocide, not just cleaning.

Smoke odor

Smoke penetrates fibers at molecular level. Requires deep wash with full extraction. May need multiple sessions in severe cases.

Food odor

Cooking grease, spices, crumbs that fall between cushions. They ferment inside and create a persistent sour smell.

Urine odor

Young children, elderly, or pets. Uric acid crystallizes in the padding and reactivates with humidity. Specific enzymatic treatment.

General "old" smell

Accumulation of sweat, dust, and mites over years. A deep wash usually solves it in one session.

FAQ

FAQ about sofa odors

Does baking soda really remove sofa odors?
It absorbs some surface odor but doesn't reach the padding. If the smell has been there for weeks or comes from inside, it won't work. Also, if not vacuumed properly, it gets into the fibers and attracts moisture.
Can I use Febreze or similar?
It masks the odor for a few hours. It doesn't eliminate it. When the product evaporates, the smell returns because the cause is still inside the sofa.
How long until the odor is gone after treatment?
The original odor is gone after treatment. While the sofa dries (3-5 hours) it may smell like cleaning product, but afterward it's neutral.
Can the odor come back?
If the cause was one-time (a pet accident, a spill), it won't return. If the cause is ongoing (pet keeps climbing up, constant humidity), the odor may return over time.
Can you remove cat urine smell?
Yes, but it's one of the most persistent. Uric acid crystallizes in the padding and reactivates with humidity. We use specific enzymes that break down those crystals. Works in the vast majority of cases.
Is the treatment safe for pets and children?
Yes. We use biodegradable, low-toxicity products. Once the sofa is dry, it's completely safe. We just ask that you don't use it while it's still damp.
